Shoji was called Clean Launcher until October 2026. It is the same app: updates keep your layout and your Pro.

Questions

How do I make Shoji my home screen?

The first time you open Shoji, a few welcome pages show what it does; Get started on the last one asks Android to make Shoji your home app. Later, open Settings › Default home app, or your phone's Settings › Apps › Default apps › Home app.

What is in the menu at first?

Primary holds Phone, Messages, Contacts and Settings, and My apps holds every app you installed, by name. Recent, Most used and Newest fill themselves. Rename, reorder or delete any of them in Settings › App menu.

What is private mode?

A second home screen with only the apps and widgets you put on it, and no app menu, for when a child or a guest has your phone. Pick a gesture for it under Settings › Private mode and set a passcode; the gesture switches to the private home, and leaving it, or changing anything on it, takes the passcode. Private mode changes the home screen only: the notification shade, Recents and the phone's own settings stay as they are.

What is free and what is Pro?

Shoji is free to use. Free: icon packs from Google Play, grid and list layouts, widgets, folders, the menu glass, notification dots, backup, the edge gestures and swipe down for notifications.

Pro adds private mode, the twelve icon looks, a wallpaper per screen, automatic wallpaper changes, the list style's options, a bottom bar that shows any category, and home gestures. Every Pro feature is open for 3 days from install. After that, Pro is a yearly subscription or a one-time lifetime purchase; the price is shown on the Pro page before you buy. Your Pro settings are kept and come back as soon as Pro is on.

How do I cancel the yearly subscription?

Open Google Play › your profile › Payments & subscriptions › Subscriptions, choose Shoji and tap Cancel. Pro stays on until the end of the paid year.

I bought Pro on another phone

Sign in to the same Google account, open Settings › Shoji Pro and tap Restore purchases.

Why does the app ask for the accessibility service?

Only for the edge navigation gestures (Home, Back, Recents) and for home gestures you set to lock the screen, open Recents, take a screenshot or open the power menu. The app explains this and asks for your consent first. The service does not read anything on your screen. Everything else works without it.

System gestures stop working with another launcher on my phone

Some phones turn gesture navigation off when the home screen is not their own. Shoji brings its own: swipe up from the bottom for Home, swipe up and hold for Recents, swipe in from either side for Back. Open Settings › Navigation & gestures; on these phones it is a checklist, done in order, and each step ticks itself once done:

  1. Launcher gestures. Turn on Edge gestures. The phone opens its accessibility settings: scroll down, tap Downloaded apps, tap Edge gestures and turn on its switch, then come back. (Leave Edge gestures (backup) alone: Shoji uses it by itself when it brings the gestures back.)
  2. System. Set System navigation to gestures.
  3. Keep the gestures running. Allow Shoji to start automatically; in App info › Battery (or Power) choose No restrictions; and lock Shoji in Recents.
  4. Auto-restore (advanced, one time). Lets Shoji switch its gestures back on within a minute after a cleanup closes it. Tap Set up on this phone and follow the four steps: turn on Developer options, turn on Wireless debugging, show the code notification, then open Wireless debugging again, tap Pair device with pairing code, swipe down, open the code notification with its arrow, tap Pair, type the 6 digits and tap Send.

How do I use an icon pack?

Install an icon pack from Google Play, then open Settings › Icon pack and pick it. Apps the pack doesn't cover are drawn to match it.

How do I move to a new phone?

Open Settings › Backup & restore › Back up to a file, move the file to the new phone, and restore it there. Widgets are not included, so add them again after restoring.

How do I uninstall Shoji?

Open Settings › Uninstall Shoji (last on the page) for the steps and a button to the app's page in your phone's Settings, then tap Uninstall. If you use Shoji's own gestures (step 1 above), set System navigation back to Buttons first: once Shoji is gone, the phone may otherwise be left with no way to go home or back. The page shows whether that is done. Back up first if you may want your layout again.

Which phones are supported?

Android 9 and later. Blur behind the menu needs Android 12 or later; older versions dim instead. Auto-restore needs Android 12 or later.
